3 week course , 2 ½ hours/week. Up to 8 students in each class. Adults 18+

Learn to create dynamic layered surfaces and textured designs! This class will focus on slip application, underglazing and overglazing techniques.

Accessible to both hand builders and wheel throwers, students are expected to arrive already capable of creating pieces. Clay and decorating mediums will be provided.

IMPORTANT: This class is not focused on creating items, ONLY DECORATING will be demonstrated. You are responsible for creating or bringing the items you wish to use for surface decoration. That means, if you need something leather hard or bisque, you should plan to bring the items at this stage. We do have bisqued items for sale. For slip decorating on wet pieces, you can create in class, however, this will not be part of the instruction.

In this class students will learn to use coloured slips and a range of decorating techniques to create vibrant and textured surfaces. In week one, we will cover wet slip application on freshly made items (made in class or brought in); week two will cover slip trailing and underglazing on firmer clay (have leather hard work ready). In week three, students will need a piece of bisque fired work to practice mock-majolica overglazing.

Students can use practice time to trim or create other work.

Participants need minimum one term of ceramics classes and have some experience with glazing and decorating. This class will not focus on construction.

 This class includes:

  • Option to buy a 1/2 bag of clay, for practice but clay used during class will be provided.
  • Coloured slips, underglazes, and glazes
  • Use of student studio tools
  • A space to keep your work
  • Glazing and firing any work you wish to keep is included
  • Daily access to the student classroom for you to drop-in and practice!
  • Student Classroom is available to any student who is currently enrolled in an active class, once your class has begun. Practice hours are from 9am - 6pm, 7 days a week except when a class is in session or an event is booked. Please check the weekly schedule posted outside the classroom to be sure the classroom studio is available for practice before coming in. :)

You’ll need to prepare by:

  • Wearing comfortable clothing and shoes which you don’t mind getting dirty
  • Please wear closed toe shoes
  • Bring an apron to preserve your clothes, if you can. (We do sell aprons if you need one)
  • Please leave jewelry and watches at home
  • Please tie your hair back and up if you can
  • Pro tip: shorter fingernails are really helpful
